'My great-grandfather could never have imagined this future for Port Talbot,' said Dr. Bevan, standing in her lab thick with the aroma of her fungi colonies. 'He worried about losing his job in the steel plant, never realising that his descendants would be at the forefront of global sustainable research. 'The swings of fortune for Port Talbot began in 2042 when a minor experiment in CO2 absorption by fungus in Rhondda Valley turned major. Last year, mycelium-based carbon-capture technology - mushroom tech, as it's colloquially known - mitigated an astonishing 80 million tons of CO2 globally, roughly the equivalent of taking 17.3 million cars off the roads. Port Talbot's metamorphosis is testament to humanity's ability to adapt and prosper, officially recognising that economic prosperity and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.'Artificial intelligence, expected to take away our jobs, became one of our greatest allies,' remarks Ffion Hughes, Director of AI Ethics at the Port Talbot Tech Hub. 'AI helped to model the impacts of steel plant closures, guided the transition to carbon-capture technologies, and now powers our city’s smart grids. 'One will notice that chimneys no longer darken the sky but emit sporadic puffs of spores from the carbon-capture parks. In place of rubber apron-clad factory workers are horticulture experts tending to the mushroom forests, and AI scientists wiring the next predictive model for climate resilience.Looking ahead, Port Talbot reveals the incredible potential of sustainable transformations. Such changes, once feared, have proven to deliver a prosperous future that honours the past, while courageously forging a new and sustainable path forward.
